Shantel (shann-TEHL) is named after Shantel, the stage name for Stefan Hantel, who composed the music. The dance was choreographed by Maurits and Tineke Van Geel who researched their dance in Odessa. The dance is meant to be done with Klezmer styling. The song the dance is done to was originally a calypso tune from the 1930s called “Black but Sweet”, and originally sung by Wilmoth Houdini.
